The Shiretoko region is designated a UNESCO world heritage site!


Shiretoko National Park, located on the Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, is one of Japan's most beautiful and unspoiled national parks where the Pacific Ocean joins Okhotsk Sea.
Lots of waterfalls directly into the sea, and those show us the powerful nature.
This is called "The last unexplored region in Japan" that lives a lot of Hokkaido's animals as well as the protected species and rare birds.
Moreover, the place has the alpine plants in the low ground so that you can feel the true nature.



œShiretoko Museum
Stopping by the Shiretoko Museum, you can learn about the nature and history of Shiretoko Peninsula; such as Ainu people's life, species of Shiretoko, insects, and so much more. It explains why the place attracts many people. The location is 15 minutes from the Shari JR Station.

œOronko Rock
From the top of the mountain rock, you can see the Utoro port, the hot spring town, Shiretoko range of mountains, and Okhotsk in the 360 degree view. There is a legendary fierce battle between Orokko family and Ainu once.

œOshin-Koshin Observatory@
The Oshin-Koshin Waterfalls are located on the way to Utoro from Shari where are along the national road. This is also a favorite picture taking spot for visitors. Above the waterfalls, the stroll roads are well-maintained. From the Oshin-Koshin Observatory, you can view the Shiretoko range of mountains and the Okhotsk.

œPuyuni Cape@@
Puyuni Cape is located on a hill on the way to Shiretoko Five Lakes from Utoro. From the summit, Utoro Coast, Oronko-Rock, and Utoro Port can be seen. It is possible to see the mountains of Akan National Park and Okhotsk shore line on the fine days.

œShiretoko Nature Center

Ten minutes from Utoro Hot Spring toward to Shiretoko Peninsula by car, you see a big building on your left, which is called "Shiretoko Nature Center." On the Dynamic screen (12m ~20m), the magnificent Shiretoko's four seasons are shown just in front of your eyes. The center also provides a large variety of information of the nature. So, we strongly recommend that you should stop by here before touring Shiretoko.

‘Sea kayak Cliff Tour@
This is experiential tour by sea kayaks that you could feel the powerful waterfalls and the steep cliffs. The tour takes you to the Furepe Waterfall (Maiden's Tears) and Men's Tears. You will also see the flying Sea Cormorants and Spectacled Guillemots at close hand. Even if you don't have the kayaking experience before, you will enjoy kayaking after the one hour crash course.

œFurepe Waterfall
You can ask anything about Shiretoko at "Shiretoko Nature Center." Twenty minutes walking of maintained promenade takes you to the waterfall, which is called "Maiden's Tears." Shiretoko mountains and birds flit in the coast are closely seen from the observatory.

œShiretoko Five Lakes
Shiretoko five lakes located in coniferous forests such as Japanese spruces and fir trees. There is a 2.4km hiking path that encircles the lakes. Five lakes strolling takes about one hour, and 1st lake & the 2nd lake strolling takes in about 20 minutes. The guide board let you know the knowledge of the trees, the flowers, the insects, and the animals, and more.

œYuhi-dai (Evening Sun Observatory)
Evening Sun Observatory is located on the hill where the Utoro Hot spring Hotel goes up.
In summer, the evening Sun set is absolutely gorgeous contrast with Okhotsk.
In winter, white drift ices give off a golden gleam. You can enjoy seeing varied evening sun through the year.

œShiretoko Pass
Shiretoko Pass has the shortest open-period road in Japan. You can pass through it only from the end of April to the end of October.
From the observatory, Kunashiri Island and Mt. Rausu in northern territory can be looked down as well.

œHot Spring of Kamuiwakka Waterfal@

Visiting to the hot spring of Kamuiwakka Waterfall is absolutely one of Japan's ultimate hot spring experiences. The hot spring water pours out from the rock walls and mixes with river water as it spills over these falls. The temperature is just right for bathing. In order to reach the hot spring, you first have to hike up a warm mountain stream for about 30 minutes. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy taking a hot spring bath in the natural basin at the base of the waterfall. Be aware that the climb up the stream is very steep and slippery in some places.
–Note: Due to the construction, shuttle bus is the only way to get to the Hot Spring of Kamuiwakka Waterfall between 7/13-9/20 (70 days only) in 2008.

œKamuiwakka Waterfall
You can observe the waterfall from ships. The hot spring water from the Mt.Iou flows into the Kamuiwakka River, and then finally falls into the Okhotsk through the innumerable waterfalls.

œShiretoko Aurora Fantasy in Winter
In winter, Shiretoko becomes another world. Snow white and floating ices cover the whole land of Shiretoko. There is a magnificent event in winter is called, "Aurora Fantasy." The phenomenon of Aurora is used to be seen naturally, however, it's hard to see it nowadays so that the locals produced an artificial one by using the laser light beams. This aurora fantasy shows can be seen from the beginning of February to the beginning of March in Floating Ice Natural Park.
